Love To Share?
At the bottom of this post, and in many posts to come, you’ll find a small, simple way to help someone else. I call it “the love2share project,” and I hope you’ll love it too!–steph
This month on Make Home Make Sense we are focusing on refashioning. The Theology of Refashioning to be more exact. So in the midst of contemplating ancient concepts like worship and temples and adornment, I thought I would get into the modern spirit of the theme, too. Which is why I decided to make a few projects out of things I already had.
The following is one of my favorites:
Who would dream of wearing a turtleneck during the dog-days of summer? Those long sleeves and collar up to your ears? In a word you would be hot.
That is unless said turtleneck was refashioned into a fun (and cool) drape-y tank. Which is precisely what happened to this tank here:
I purchased the striped turtleneck last fall (you can read about it here) for a song and knew immediately that I would get rid of all of its “turtleneck qualities” as soon as I had the chance. Needless to say, the heat of mid-summer has provided the motivation.
The construction for this top was quite simple. In fact, deconstructing it probably took longer! Just a few seam stitches and some gathering and Presto! Of course I did make a few errors in judgement when I was piecing it together (I always seem to do this), and had to retrace my steps a few times. But doing it again on another turtleneck–now that I know the steps–would be a cinch.
I won’t bore you with all of the nitty-gritty how to details, but here are a few comments on the blouse:
- the sleeves were repurposed to comprise the draped section across the middle.
- I didn’t have to do any tucking/styling/trimming on the neck and arms once the collar and sleeves were removed (=easy!).
- And after stitching the draped section to the very bottom I realized that it needed to be moved up because the sleeves didn’t have that much stretch in them!
This refashion is just one of seven that I’ll be sharing over the course of this month as part of my August theme on refashioning. Some of the projects are new to both me and you, and some will be a little familiar if you’ve been following me in the past. But all of them are here as visual aids for my extended article, The Theology of Refashioning, that I hope you’ll download and read today!
